The Winner is …
Uluu

It was a difficult year for bioplastics. The European bioplastics sector is still haunted by its old demons of corruption, cartels, unfair commercial practices, and connection to criminal organisation so I couldn’t go for a European company and had to look a bit further … Australia. One bioplastic startup managed to stay out of these bad practices and to achieve great things: Uluu
Congratulations to the whole Uluu team. You can be proud of yourself. You had an incredible year. Keep up the good work.

History of Uluu
As an ecologist researching sea turtles in her native Brazil, Uluu co-founder Dr Julia Reisser saw that they were eating more plastic than anything else. She was driven to do a PhD in ocean plastics and was one of the earliest members of The Ocean Cleanup, a Dutch not-for-profit developing technology to remove plastic from the seas. Julia later studied plastic recycling.
But as time went on, she felt she was tackling the symptoms, not the source of the plastic pollution problem.
Julia looked at the market and saw that—unlike renewable energy—there were no persuasive alternatives to plastics made from fossil fuels. And the idea for Uluu was born.
In 2020, Julia teamed up with co-founder Michael Kingsbury, a former business executive and M&A lawyer. Together they turned the blueprint into a business they were confident would work and they could dedicate their lives to.
Final Remarks
The best advise I could give to Uluu is the following:
Integrity is one of the most important values. Stay clean of immoral practices and do not take any lessons from your European counterparts: do not engage in cartel formations, stay away from backstage politics and corruption. Do not hire lobbyists who uses illegal means. Do not associate yourself with an organisation called European Bioplastics.
