Tom Szaky
Tom Szaky is known for being the CEO and founder of Terracycle and Loop.
He has been the face and voice of the plastic recycling and reusable packaging industry.
Tom was born in Hungary in 1982. He had to leave his hometown because of the Chernobyl accident and he immigrated to Canada in 1987. He studied psychology and economics at Princeton University.
Tom started his waste management venture by acquiring the composting system that converted the waste of the dining halls of Princeton University.
He launched Loop at the 2019 World Economic Forum in Davos. We could say that this is the world’s first scalable reusable packaging solution. Loop is currently available in the UK, France, Canada, Japan, United States and Australia.
Tom creates custom-made recycling solutions for brands; a bit like boutique recycling.
His solutions may not be perfect but he’s coming up with solutions and trying to change the world.
One of his greatest achievement is that he’s bringing the word “trust” back into the plastic recycling equation.
Another reason why Tom is the person of the year has to do with his “moral integrity”; he’s not trying to fiddle or to harm other people and organisations.
He has been the most important person of the packaging industry and he’s helping the industry to re-deem itself.
Tom Szaky is the Elon Musk of the packaging industry and was the most inspiring person of 2021.
