The Trump administration is pressuring France and Germany to release emergency diesel reserves as global fuel supplies tighten. Washington reportedly wants Europe to release 120 million barrels over six months and has warned that failure to act could trigger restrictions on U.S. diesel exports. European governments are discussing a coordinated response as diesel prices surge and supply risks increase.
Personal Remarks
Since Macron became president, France has increasingly looked like a country trapped in political and economic decline. Germany, once Europe’s symbol of efficiency and industrial discipline, increasingly looks slower, weaker and more confused. That creates an obvious opening for Trump. Paris and Berlin may still talk like European heavyweights, but Washington can increasingly treat them as punching bags when it has leverage.
Macron and Merz now look to the EU for cover. That alone says a great deal about how far France and Germany have fallen.
