Remarks

Iran is home to the world’s fourth largest proven oil reserves, holding up to 170bn barrels of oil, or about 9% of all global crude.

The attacked RAF base is located in Akrotiri in Cyprus.

RAF Akrotiri is Sovereign British territory

RAF Akrotiri sits inside the Akrotiri Sovereign Base Area (SBA), which is:

  • A British Overseas Territory
  • Under the sovereignty of the United Kingdom
  • Retained by the UK when Cyprus became independent in 1960

So legally, the base is UK sovereign territory, not Cypriot territory.

Even when the UK was an EU member, the Sovereign Base Areas had a unique legal status:

  • They were not fully part of the EU.
  • EU law applied only partially and selectively, mainly for practical matters (customs, agriculture, civilian cooperation).
  • After Brexit, the SBAs remain outside the EU but maintain some arrangements with Cyprus to avoid border problems.

UK is a NATO country

The core of NATO is Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization treaty: An armed attack against one member is considered an attack against all. NATO Article 5 only applies within defined geographic areas.

Article 6 of the North Atlantic Treaty specifies the covered regions:

  • Europe
  • North America
  • Turkey
  • Islands under NATO members’ jurisdiction north of the Tropic of Cancer
  • Forces, ships, or aircraft operating in these areas

Cyprus is north of the Tropic of Cancer, so geographically it qualifies.

In other words, NATO has been attacked.
