Bioplastics Chronicles and Fairy Tales Waste & Waste Management

Belgium incinerates plastic waste (FREE)

I had a discussion with an ex-employee of a waste management firm located in 'Forest' (Belgium) regarding what happens to our plastic waste. This is a FREE article.

The feedback relates to the time the person was working there (approx. 4 years ago).

We have curbside waste collections in Belgium for:

  • PMC – ‘plastic, metal and carton waste’ (blue bags),
  • Non-recyclable / waste (white bags)
  • Organic waste (orange bags)

He told me that both the blue bags and white bags were incinerated; the waste was not sorted nor recycled.

I ‘m not sure if this is reliable info but the person seemed to be sure about this.

What I believe is happening at this point in time:

White bags are incinerated in Belgium.

Blue bags:

  • PET bottles: sorted and recycled;
  • Metal waste: sorted and recycled;
  • The other plastic waste (PP, PE, PVC, etc): incinerated in Belgium, or stored in Belgium with no intention to be recycled, or stored and intended to be exported abroad where it will be landfilled, incinerated or littered.
  • Cartons: incinerated in Belgium, or stored in Belgium with no intention to be recycled, or stored and intended to be exported abroad where it will be landfilled, incinerated or littered.

Again – According to my source, they didn’t differentiate between white and blue bags four years ago … everything was incinerated. It’s hard to believe but then again … there’s no serious control and the waste management sector acts in mysterious ways.
