The Trabant was the first bioplastic car. It was built in 1957 in East Germany as a response to the West German VW (Volkswagen) Beetle. The production of the Trabant came to an end in 1991 after the German reunification in 1990.
The VW Beetle was an affordable car. The name ‘Volkswagen’ means the ‘car of the people’ in German.
It was Hitler who created the VW (Volkswagen) during the Third Reich.
Trabant was a slavic word that translated to ‘Spoutnic’ in Russian meaning ‘companion’. Remember the American movies where they used to caricature the soviets with the word ‘Comrades’.
The body of the Trabant was made with a composite called ‘Duroplast’, a form of plastic mixed with recycled wool or cotton. It would be more exact to say that the car was made with a biocomposite (plastic mixed with natural fibres).
The Trabant was thus the first commercially produced bioplastic car.
Context
I found these pictures in my picture cloud. I took them in 2019 in Amsterdam but can’t remember where exactly.
Ze Germans did it again.
At one point, Germany stood at the top of the world but after Angela Merkel, Ursula Von der leyen and the covid crisis … Germany became a ghost of what it used to be… a bit like France.
The European Union has a few skeletons in its closet …. as if they did it on purpose to impoverish the two main Western European countries. The UK left on time.
