Around 400 high schools were closed on October 2, while nearly 2,000 people were arrested amid clashes, fires and property damage. The government says radical groups are exploiting the movement; opponents accuse authorities of excessive policing.
That’s the official version. The unofficial interpretation is more political: some see the fires as an expression of deeper hostility toward France and its institutions. Decades of mass immigration, failed integration and social fragmentation have created communities in which resentment toward the French state can run deep. In that reading, the unrest is not only about schools or policing, but also about identity, belonging and authority.
