Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have prompted Iraq to move fuel oil through Syria by road to the Mediterranean port of Baniyas. Reported shipments reached 21.4 million barrels between March and August 2026, including 5.91 million barrels in August. The route offers Iraq an alternative export corridor while generating transit activity for Syria amid ongoing regional conflict and uncertainty.
