A gold-plated statue of a naked Donald Trump, titled The Orange Plague, was unveiled at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on October 6. Created by Danish artist Jens Galschiøt, the sculpture depicts Trump sitting on the shoulders of a smaller, frail man. The satirical artwork forms part of an exhibition proposed by Danish left-wing MEP Per Clausen.

What an insult to the American people. European politicians may dislike Donald Trump, but they should remember that he was democratically elected by millions of Americans. Mocking an elected president in the very building that is supposed to represent European democracy shows a remarkable lack of respect. Whatever one’s political opinions, this spectacle raises a simple question: how low has European political debate fallen?
