India’s crude oil import bill surged 48.4% to $74.8 billion between April and August 2026, even though import volumes actually fell 0.4%. The increase came mainly from higher oil prices, tighter Middle Eastern supplies and soaring freight costs. Shipping rates from Saudi Arabia to India have reportedly risen more than 400%, adding further pressure to India’s energy bill.
