The EU is increasingly exporting its plastic waste problem to Turkey, where large volumes of European rubbish end up in recycling facilities, dumps or illegal burning sites. Critics say Europe’s “circular economy” risks becoming waste outsourcing, shifting pollution and health impacts beyond its borders while allowing EU countries to claim higher recycling performance at home.
Personal remark
At this point, one has to admire the absurdity. Europe apparently cannot recycle all of its own plastic waste, yet somehow believes Turkey can solve the problem. And if that waste ultimately ends up being incinerated or landfilled there, why ship it thousands of kilometres away? Why not deal with it in Europe, under European environmental rules? EU plastic-waste policy increasingly looks as if it were written by a satirist.
