Fifteen workers have died following a fire at the Amur Gas Chemical Complex in Russia’s Far East. The facility, still under construction, is a joint venture between Russian petrochemical producer SIBUR and China’s Sinopec. Thirty-nine workers remain hospitalized. The complex is designed to produce 2.3 million tonnes of polyethylene and 400,000 tonnes of polypropylene annually. Russian authorities are investigating possible industrial safety violations, while construction continues in areas unaffected by the fire.
