French biodegradable plastic producer Lactips has awarded a contract to BASF for the marketing of its water-soluble, bio-based and fully biodegradable material.

This contract will help BASF’s strategy in leveraging sustainable solutions to boost its business growth.

BASF will use its network and supply chain expertise to market the product.

Lactips focuses on developing film material technology based on technical casein obtained from excess milk protein production.

The French firm intends to replace polyvinyl alcohol films with the biodegradable material used in homecare, industrial and institutional (I&I) applications such as dishwasher tablets.

BASF Care Chemicals new business development director Robert Parker said: “Sustainability plays a major role in all of our business processes. Lactips’ solution for films for dishwasher tabs supplements our existing portfolio of sustainable offerings.

“It allows us to provide our customers with a broad portfolio of biodegradable products for the homecare industry.”

Last year, Lactips launched its plastic-free and soluble dishwasher tablet and powder unidoses.

Established in 2014, the French firm offers water-soluble, fully biodegradable plastic materials based on milk protein.

The company is currently launching its pellet in the market for bio-sourced unit packaging for detergent products.

The company also plans to establish a 2,500m² plant in France in a bid to increase its production capacity to more than 3,000t per year.

Lactips CEO Marie-Hélène Gramatikoff said:

“Lactips is proud to have its technology marketed by a leading global partner with a strong network. We will benefit from BASF’s experience and latest developments in the homecare industry.
