Europe’s petrochemical industry is shrinking fast. Since 2024, factories representing nearly 11 million tonnes of annual production capacity have closed, stopped production or face closure. These factories produce chemicals used to make plastics and everyday products. High energy costs, weak demand and cheaper foreign competition are driving the decline. Europe is gradually losing its ability to produce essential materials.
