A possible US-Russia deal involving Lukoil could have consequences beyond the oil company itself. Cypriot international-relations expert Charalambos Chrysostomou argues that closer US-Russia energy ties could create new opportunities for Cyprus and Greece. Greece offers ports and LNG infrastructure, while Cyprus could strengthen its role as an Eastern Mediterranean energy hub linking regional gas resources with European markets.
Personal Remarks
On paper, turning Cyprus into a Mediterranean energy platform where the US and Russia could cooperate sounds interesting. My problem is more personal: Eni already has major interests there and would likely benefit indirectly from such a development. Since Eni is currently one of my legal adversaries, I find it difficult to promote a strategy that could strengthen its position before our dispute is settled.
Therefore, for the moment, I would politely ask Washington and Moscow to put the idea of turning Cyprus into a great fossil-energy hub in the freezer for now. My apologies to the Republic of Cyprus. If Cyprus has any questions about my hesitation, they may wish to address them to Eni’s board.
