Brussels may have found its perfect AI policymaker: the Vatican’s AI guru, who reportedly doesn’t use AI himself. In EU circles, this is less a weakness than a qualification. Direct experience can create dangerous prejudices. Better to regulate technology from a safe distance, preferably through consultations, stakeholder workshops, 600-page reports and a task force chaired by someone who has never opened ChatGPT.
The EU appears to follow the Charlie Chaplin recruitment method: find someone completely unsuited to the machinery, put him in charge of it, and call the resulting chaos governance.
