Italian unions CGIL and Filctem say Eni’s Versalis restructuring could have consequences well beyond Priolo. They say an Industry Ministry official told a technical meeting that the plan had been approved directly by Industry Minister Adolfo Urso and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The unions therefore accuse the government of politically endorsing the shutdown of basic chemicals production. Ragusa was considered closed, while Priolo’s cracker was scheduled to stop production. They warn the move could affect downstream operations in Ferrara, Ravenna and Mantua, along with other companies dependent on ethylene, while reindustrialisation plans remain unclear.
