Andy Burnham, Clown Extraordinaire

Written by

Andy Burnham has found a new version of socialism.

Forget champagne socialism. Welcome to McLaren socialism.

Burnham is proudly advertising McLaren’s decision to invest £500 million in Britain, build more cars in the UK and create 1,000 jobs. Good news for British manufacturing, certainly. McLaren’s new SUV is expected to compete in a market where vehicles can cost more than £200,000.

But there is something wonderfully absurd about a Labour government celebrating supercars while simultaneously discussing yet more taxation.

Burnham wants Britain to manufacture McLarens. Excellent.

But who exactly is supposed to buy them?

For years, British households have faced an increasingly heavy tax burden and squeezed disposable incomes. Burnham’s own government is now preparing another difficult budget, with further tax increases among the options being discussed.

So we arrive at the magnificent economic philosophy of McLaren socialism:

Tax the British until they cannot afford the car, then celebrate when Britain builds the car for somebody else.
