Japan is preparing to diversify its crude oil supplies and support Middle Eastern pipelines that bypass the Strait of Hormuz, as Tokyo seeks to strengthen its energy security following recent geopolitical disruptions.
The strategy also matters for Japan’s petrochemical industry. Japan’s traditional model relies heavily on naphtha, obtained from domestic refining and imports, which is fed into steam crackers to produce ethylene, propylene, butadiene and aromatics — the building blocks for plastics and chemicals.
Japan is now rethinking that model. While securing and diversifying crude and naphtha supplies, the country is also consolidating naphtha crackers, maintaining enough basic chemical production for domestic demand and focusing increasingly on higher-value chemicals.
In other words, Japan wants fewer vulnerabilities — from the oil tanker all the way to the petrochemical plant.
