According to a PwC study conducted for Unesda (the EU soft drinks association), the soft drinks industry invested between €2.7 billion and €8.7 billion in the development and implementation of tethered caps for plastic bottles.
Blunder
I heard a lecture by Bart De Wever (Belgian Prime Minister), who said that because of tethered caps, plastic bottles are now sinking to the bottom of the ocean instead of remaining at the water’s surface.
Which is obviously a problem — considering the European Commission seems to regard tethered caps as one of its greatest achievements of the past 25 years.
Turns out the European Commission didn’t solve marine litter — they just moved it somewhere less visible. Bold strategy.
