Last year, the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) announced that MyBiomass Sdn Bhd, a unit of the Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT), plans to start-up production at its industrial bio-refinery plant in Johor by end-2016 with a groundbreaking scheduled in the fourth quarter this year.
The biorefinery will have an annual production capacity of 60.000 tons of high-value green chemicals using palm biomass waste. The project will involve an investment of between 300-400 million.MYR (Malaysian Ringit) equivalent to 65 to 90 million Euros
As far as foreign investment is concerned, France-based METabolic EXplorer, Texas based Glycos Biotechnologies and California based Verdezyne (among others) have planned renewable chemicals capacity investments in Malaysia in the short term.
