EU member states have backed a Council negotiating position extending pesticide approval periods to 15 years initially and 25 years on renewal, while easing some procedures. PAN Europe says the changes weaken health and environmental safeguards and could prolong hazardous pesticide use. The Council argues the package reduces red tape while maintaining high food, health and environmental safety standards.
Personal remarks
Sometimes I genuinely wonder whether the Commission is trying to make us sick. When rules are relaxed for substances that end up in our food chain, it becomes increasingly difficult to understand whose interests are actually being protected.
