Whenever a waste-processing facility burns down, authorities should look very carefully at the cause. Waste crime is a real business: regulators have documented cases where operators illegally burn waste to avoid treatment and disposal costs. Arson is also a recognised cause of recycling-site fires.
That does not mean every waste-company fire is suspicious. Batteries, self-combustion, electrical faults and accidents are common causes too. But because destroying waste can eliminate significant disposal costs—and potentially trigger insurance claims—major fires deserve thorough independent investigation before anyone concludes they were accidental.
