Evonik will close two smaller chemical sites in Hamburg and Bitterfeld and move production to larger German plants. The company says weak demand, margin pressure, Asian competition and low capacity utilisation are hurting competitiveness. Around 90 employees are affected as Evonik concentrates production and cuts costs across its German operations.
Personal Remarks
It would be too easy to blame Europe’s industrial decline solely on the European Commission. The European Council also carries responsibility. I think the deeper problem is the quality of our politicians. Is it corruption or incompetence? The scale of the incompetence is simply too great. Some politicians may be corrupted as certain decisions appear to be proactively harming Europe’s industrial base. It can’t be a coincidence.
