Before Downing Street, Keir Starmer headed the Crown Prosecution Service during years when British girls were being sexually exploited by foreign grooming gangs and the state repeatedly failed them. That failure now feels like part of a wider European disease: the political establishment delivers sermons about democracy, human rights and European values while vulnerable European women and girls can be abused, trafficked or forced into prostitution by foreign criminal gangs under their noses. The speeches are magnificent. The protection, rather less so. Or perhaps the conspiracy theorists were right all along, and some people at the very top are simply far too comfortable around monsters.
