Japan’s environment and industry ministries have launched three task forces to advance plastic circularity. One will examine mass-balance labelling, recycled plastics and bioplastics, including ways to narrow their cost gap with fossil-based materials. Japan remains well below its 2030 biomass-plastics target, increasing pressure for new policy measures to accelerate adoption.
Personal remark
I’m not convinced mass balance is the right way forward. The problem is that the European Commission, which was supposed to regulate this properly, failed to develop a credible alternative and instead largely adopted the accounting approach proposed by industry. Now others are following in the European Commission’s footsteps. What began as a questionable regulatory choice risks becoming the global default. The blunder is in the making.
