Negotiations on the UN Plastics Treaty remain difficult. A new “Aid to Negotiations” document was circulated in August 2026 to help restart discussions following the failure to reach agreement in Geneva. The text contains no global plastic production cap and has been criticised by environmental groups for lacking ambition. Attention now turns to Bangkok, where informal consultations between Heads of Delegation are scheduled for 27–30 September 2026, ahead of the next stage of treaty negotiations.
