Not every story about the oil industry has to be a negative one. When an energy company promotes policies that can genuinely benefit local communities, those initiatives deserve recognition—even when the company in question is ENI.
Speaking at the Mozambique CEO Summit in Maputo, ENI reaffirmed that investments in the country’s natural gas sector should not be measured solely by LNG production or financial returns. According to the company, success should also be judged by the benefits left behind for Mozambique: stronger local businesses, skilled jobs, knowledge transfer and long-term economic development.
This is an approach that deserves support.
Too often, resource-rich countries see enormous wealth extracted while only a limited share reaches the domestic economy. Encouraging local suppliers, investing in workforce skills and creating lasting economic value should become standard practice across the oil and gas industry—not the exception.
Good initiatives should be praised, regardless of who is behind them. I have been highly critical of ENI on several issues in the past, but that should not prevent acknowledging positive developments when they occur. Constructive criticism also means recognising good practices when they deserve it.
If implemented effectively, this type of strategy could become an example for other multinational energy companies operating around the world. Natural resources should not only generate profits—they should also help build stronger local economies and create opportunities for the people who live where those resources are extracted.
However, there is one important caveat. The objective should not simply be to transfer capital to local companies. The real measure of success is whether local people benefit directly through quality employment, skills development and a fair share of the economic value created.
The golden rule is simple: as much of that investment as possible should reach ordinary citizens by creating jobs for low- and middle-income workers, helping build a stronger and more prosperous local economy.
