Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever maintains that it is in Europe’s strategic interest to pursue a peace settlement with Russia
He advocates for the normalisation of relations with Moscow to ensure the security and affordability of Europe’s energy supply, arguing that such a move is “common sense”.
Many officials in the European Commission and Parliament support a total cessation of Russian gas imports based on ethical principles.
The problem is that in Europe we don’t have the means anymore to have high values and principles.
De Wever suggests a more pragmatic approach. He believes that current economic realities require European leaders to prioritize the interests of businesses and the middle class over abstract values, necessitating a more stable and functional relationship with Russia.
De Wever has faced significant internal opposition from his political peers for these views, leading some observers to question the foresight of the broader Belgian and European political establishment.
De Wever’s approach represents a lone voice of realism in a room filled with leaders whose refusal to compromise may ultimately be detrimental to the continent’s stability.
I don’t know how De Wever stays patient with politicians and Parliament members who seem totally out of touch with reality. If I were him, I’d lose my cool. I’d personally travel to both Russia and the U.S. to build bridges with their leaders. We should be allies with both and stop prioritising Zelenskyy. To me, the Kyiv leadership is corrupt, and Zelenskyy lacks the stature of a real statesman—he’s just draining resources. He looks like a little clown playing in a division where he doesn’t belong.
