Eco-business on COP28 (FREE)

Dear Axel,

The credibility of COP28 has taken a serious hit before it has even started.

The conference’s chief Sultan Al Jaber, who also heads up the United Arab Emirates’ state oil company, reportedly planned to pursue fossil fuel deals at the climate talks, adding to a string of controversies since the oil tycoon was handed the presidency.

While a COP28 spokesperson has refuted this claim, it’s hard to shake the feeling that a fox has been put in charge of guarding the hen house. In our COP28 curtain-raiser, one expert told our Dubai correspondent that he has “partly lost faith that this process would have a tangible impact on climate change.”

As trust in multilateral negotiations to deliver climate action reaches an all-time low, the COP28 process itself appears in need of a stocktake.

Meanwhile, any changes to decision texts have huge implications for climate-vulnerable countries in Southeast Asia. We feature five agitators for change across the region who will be jostling to get their voices heard among the 70,000 delegates in attendance.

While the other UN treaty (on plastic pollution) didn’t reach a satisfying conclusion last week, waste, as a huge contributor to global emissions, should be high on the agenda.

Eco-Business is launching a new documentary Wasted that investigates Asia’s mounting waste crisis and discusses solutions within our grasp. Join us at our Singapore premiere this Saturday, or if you’re at COP28, on 7th December at Grand Hyatt Dubai.
