l’Oreal Prepares for Plastic-Less Cosmetics with Perso AI

L'Oréal has unveiled Perso, a system that makes personalized skin care and cosmetic formulations inside the consumer’s home.

Developed by the L’Oréal Technology Incubator, Perso custom-blends products and through AI, optimizes the formulas over time, according to the beauty giant.

“Building on our deep scientific heritage and leadership in innovation, L’Oréal is once again leveraging advanced technology to create smart beauty products and services that answer the needs of our consumers and offer them near-limitless personalization and precision,” Nicolas Hieronimus, L’Oréal’s deputy CEO, said about Perso, which was on display at CES Unveiled, a special preview event held before the CES showfloor opens on Tuesday, Jan. 7 in Las Vegas.

No details have been revealed about which of L’Oréal’s beauty brands will be the first to offer the sleekly designed unit that weighs about one pound and stands less than 7 inches tall.

The commercial rollout is expected sometime in 2021.

In addition to skin care, L’Oréal says the device will also be able create custom formulas for lipstick and foundation, altough those capabilities which will launch at a later date.

Users open the Perso mobile app and take a photo with their smartphone camera. Utilizing L’Oréal-owned ModiFace technology, the app uses AI to analyze the user’s overall skin condition, including deep wrinkles, fine lines, the appearance of dark spots and pore visibility; consumers can enter their own specific concerns (pore size, dullness, etc) as well.

The device will dispense a single dose of product.
