QUOTATION:

“The European Commission has been convinced by Eni VERSALIS, the proxenete who runs the brothel at the Berlaymont, that microplastics could be reduced with compostable and biodegradable plastics. How embarrassing. The US government is going for a safer and better option called cotton.

The USDA and the Trump administration have signaled that one of the most effective ways to reduce microplastic pollution is to replace synthetic fibres with U.S.-grown cotton.

From a microplastics perspective, this is one of the simplest, most direct, and potentially most effective solutions available. Synthetic textiles such as polyester, nylon, and acrylic are among the largest sources of microplastic fibre

I have long been a supporter of plastics and recognize the enormous benefits they bring to modern society. Plastic is, in many applications, an outstanding material. However, if the goal is to dramatically reduce microplastic pollution, then the cotton strategy being promoted by the Trump administration is one of the most impactful and disruptive ideas I have seen in the past decade.

Cotton creates fibres too, but they are natural cellulose fibres that generally biodegrade much faster than polyester microfibres.
