Biopak Sustainability Strategy

Biopak seems to be focussing on certifications and labels according to their recent post. Let’s look at the certifications and labels that they promote. Biopak has following certifications:

Carbon neutral – certified carbon neutral by Climate Active, a robust government-backed program.

certified B Corporation verified to meet higher levels of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability while making a positive impact on staff, customers, the wider community and the planet. They are part of a global movement of businesses balancing profit and purpose.

Environmental manufacturing – Five of our seven manufacturing facilities are certified to ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems and two are in the process of achieving certifications. This standard provides a framework that an organisation can implement to ensure the environmental impacts are considered and managed during the manufacturing process.

Home and Industrially compostable – Our plant-based compostable foodservice packaging is certified to Australian (AS4736) and European (EN13432) standards for collection and processing in industrial composting conditions or home composting standards. Check our benefits and certifications for more details on the exact certifications for individual products.

Sustainably sourced paper – BioPak packaging is made from responsibly-sourced and rapidly-renewable plant-based materials. All our paper products are made from Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) bleached fibre and many are made with FSC™-certified paper. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is the highest standard of responsible forestry.

Solar impulse Certifications – The Solar Impulse Efficient Solutions label proves the economic profitability of solutions that protect the environment – this includes our certified compostable range of packaging as well as our compost collection program which diverts our products from landfill and turns them back into nutrient-rich soil within 3 months.

Certifications & Greenwashing

According to Biopak:

When it comes to ‘sustainable’ products, you hear a lot of buzzwords like ‘ethical’, ‘biodegradable’, ‘eco-friendly’, ‘green’ – the list goes on. While these words can actually mean something, without certification or independent verification this is nothing but ‘greenwashing’.

Certifications demonstrate a company’s commitment to quality, safety and sustainability. It affirms that a company’s claims regarding the products, processes and social impacts have passed specific performance, sustainability and quality assurance tests. Where claims to environmental impact are backed up by stringent and rigorous standards assessed by third parties, it can help consumers and business owners alike to shop (and sell) more responsibly.

How to combat greenwashing

Remarks

Biopoak seem to be saying that certifications is a proof of non-greenwashing. Well, I wish they were right … let us remember that we were made to believe in the recycling label since the 1990s. Thirty years after, we have garbage patches in the oceans that equals 15 times the size of the surface of Germany.
