Dow Sustainability Commitments

Today, more than ever, the world needs leadership in environmental sustainability. That’s why we’ve set new targets around advancing a circular economy and climate protection by focusing on two closely linked issues: reducing carbon emissions and eliminating plastic waste.

These new sustainability targets align to what we see as Dow’s purpose: To deliver a sustainable future for the world through our expertise in materials science and in collaboration with our partners.

New, multi-decade targets

Building on our 2025 Sustainability Goals, these targets put us on a path to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, eliminate plastic waste in our environment and increase our positive impacts on society, our customers and our business.

Protect the climate

As part of our action plan to put us on a path to carbon neutrality by 2050, we are committed to implementing and advancing technologies to manufacture our products using less resources.

Our target

By 2030, Dow will reduce its net annual carbon emissions by 5 million metric tons versus its 2020 baseline (15% reduction). By 2050, Dow intends to be carbon neutral (Scopes 1+2+3 plus product benefits).

Stop the waste

We are collaborating to invest in key technologies and infrastructure to significantly increase global recycling.

Our target

By 2030, Dow will enable 1 million metric tons of plastic to be collected, reused or recycled through its direct actions and partnerships.

Close the Loop

We are committed to redesigning and promoting reusable or recyclable packaging applications.

Our target

By 2035, 100% of Dow products sold into packaging applications will be reusable or recyclable.

Our actions

Climate change has serious consequences for the global economy and people’s health and well-being.

Dow’s “protect the climate” targets reflect our commitment to accelerate our work with our suppliers, customers and value chain partners to ensure Dow’s ecosystem is carbon neutral by 2050.

We want to hold ourselves accountable every step of the way – from our raw materials through the end of life of our products.

Plastics are indispensable part of a low-carbon future – they make cars lighter and more fuel efficient, homes more energy-efficient and reduce food waste – a major contributor to the world’s carbon emissions.

At the same time, we are facing an unacceptable consequence: Too much plastic is lost to waste and is entering our environment. Our “stop the waste” and “close the loop” targets are aimed at making a world without plastic waste a reality.

Reducing emissions

Dow’s action plan on its path to carbon neutrality by 2050 has two primary areas of focus:

  • Ensuring the products we sell to customers continue to be more sustainable than any alternative
  • Advancing our manufacturing operations

Eliminating plastic waste

Our work to end plastic waste includes:

  • Advancing recycling technologies and infrastructure
  • Helping customers redesign and promote reusable or recyclable packaging applications
  • Demonstrating the value of recycled plastics and helping customers to use recycled plastics in their products
  • Participating in key infrastructure projects alongside our partners that enable plastic recycling globally
