EU Digital Platform for Biomass Feedstock

The online tool is the first-of-its-kind and it aims to increase the efficiency of the biomass supply chain by using information and communications technologies (ICT).

The platform will be presented during the webinar ‘Tools to enhance efficiency and sustainability in the bio-based industry’ to be held on April 2nd.

ICT-BIOCHAIN, a Bio-Based Joint Undertaking innovation project, has released an innovative platform to connect biomass suppliers and stakeholders from the biobased industries with ICT technology providers, with the goal to increase the efficiency of the biomass supply chain using new technologies.

This online tool is the first-of-its-kind to store and share information regarding regional biomass resources, potential opportunities to improve the biomass supply chain efficiency, and data on the state-of-the-art of ICT, Internet of Things (IoT), and Industry 4.0 solutions applicable to biomass supply chains.

The platform will be showcased during a Train-the-trainer webinar on April 2nd.

The webinar session, entitled ‘Tools to enhance efficiency and sustainability in the bio-based industry’, will also count with the participation of the STAR-ProBio project, which will present its tool to enhance sustainability in bio- based products and improve consumer acceptance for bio-based products.

In addition, both initiatives will introduce the best practices and lessons learned during their execution and the information needed to replicate Digital Innovation Hubs across the European bioeconomy regions.

Projects like ICT-BIOCHAIN and STAR-ProBio are helping to bring Europe to the forefront of the bioeconomy, a sector in full growth and with great economic potential.

According to the most recent estimates of the European Commission (EC), the European bioeconomy employs over 18 million people and generates 2.3 billion euros of turnover.

Moreover, the European Union foresees an investment of 10 billion euros in research in bioeconomy from now until 2027.

About ICT-BIOCHAIN

ICT-BIOCHAIN is a project aiming to promote the adoption of ICT, IoT and industry 4.0. solutions to improve the efficiency of biomass value chains.

In order to achieve this, it has developed a platform to connect stakeholders in the bio-based industry with ICT providers, and it has established two Digital Innovation Hubs, located in ready- made, test-bed bioeconomy regions: South-East Ireland and Andalusia (Spain).

Leading experts and support networks are developing region-specific bio-resource data models and providing access within these hubs to best practices, expert knowledge, and information.

Formed by a consortium of 8 partners from 5 different European countries (Finland, Germany, Ireland, Spain and the United Kingdom), this initiative has received funding from the Bio Based Industries Joint Undertaking under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.
