Stella McCartney Goes for Biodegradable Denim

Candiani Denim announced Tuesday on Instagram that designer Stella McCartney will use the mill’s exclusive plant-based Coreva Stretch Technology in her Fall/Winter 20-21 collection.

The fabric is created from organic cotton wrapped around a natural rubber core.

By replacing the common synthetic and petrol-based elastomers with a new, custom-engineered component, the mill has achieved a biodegradable stretch denim fabric without compromising elasticity and recovery properties.

Additionally, the fabrics in the Stella McCartney collection are dyed using Candiani’s resource-saving Kitotex Vegetal, a biodegradable ingredient derived from food waste, and Indigo Juice, a technique that keeps the indigo superficial on the yarn.

The result means brands like Stella McCartney can offer stretch jeans made from renewable resources and free from plastics and micro-plastics.

The collection will include 10 garments made with the technology and will be available in stores beginning in May.

“In a world where resources are diminishing and landfills are overflowing with discarded garments, it’s our duty to look for renewable resources, in addition to biodegradable and compostable materials,” said Alberto Candiani, owner of Candiani Denim.

“Denim has to take the lead as the indigo flag of this revolution and we are thrilled to be working alongside Stella McCartney to share our innovation and beliefs with the wider fashion industry,” he continued.

Candiani debuted Coreva Stretch Technology in November in a collection of jeans by long-time collaborator Denham the Jeanmaker.

Sustainable components have been an area of investment for Candiani.

The mill won the ITMA Sustainable Innovation Award last year for its ReGen fabric, a rigid selvedge denim made with Refibra and recycled fibers.

Coreva Stretch Technology gives Stella McCartney a new tool in her arsenal of sustainable alternatives.

The designer’s Spring/Summer ’19 collection is dense with garments made with sustainable viscose, organic cotton, recycled nylon and vegan leather.

On Wednesday, the designer dropped another collection with Adidas featuring parkas made with 100 percent recycled polyester and sneakers made with recycled ocean plastic.
